Students in Mrs. Cook’s Ag Food Processing class have been busy learning about food preservation and safe home canning practices. Students had the opportunity to try something new by canning carrot pickles from carrots donated by a community member. Students have worked hard to learn how to select, prepare, and safely heat and preserve high acid foods using the boiling water method. They will continue processing and canning produce and look forward to making applesauce, jam, and other canned goods this fall. Projects like these are made possible by community donations and the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership grant.

Students in Outdoor Adventures are working on their survival skills. The North Branch Area High School school grounds provides a wonderful opportunity to explore nature, learn about local plants and wildlife and develop knowledge and skills associated with the outdoors.
Currently students are in the process of collaboratively building wilderness survival shelters and learning how to make cordage from natural materials. The shelters will be evaluated on a variety of criteria from team collaboration and creativity to presentation and effectiveness to protect against the elements.
